Although I was unaware at the time, my “Wanderlust” was born during my Junior and Senior School years. As we learned World History I took great interest in people, their customs, cultural/religious beliefs and traditions, fashion, literature ….All which turned into my love of travel, experiencing and seeing for myself.
I dreamed of and often thought of being able to visit Roman and Greek sites/ruins of history …
Where did civilization begin?
What’s Myth?
What actually happened in the Roman Coliseum?
What would it have been like to live in these times, perhaps ride in a chariot?
Wait, then there is Cleopatra, King Tut, Egyptian Mummies, and Pyramids…… All captivating.
How did they ever begin to plan & build pyramids, the Mayan Ruins, Machu Picchu?
From vast landscapes, the people who live there today and their ancestors who forged a life, built traditions, established a culture & way of life that continues to interest me.
I’ve not been to nor seen all that I want to. Actually I think my “Wander List” grows. Something I often say to myself and others; “I’ve not been everywhere yet, but I am working on it”! I recently ticked off one of my Wander List Destinations of Madeira. I’ll share more about this Island paradise in one of my upcoming “Destination Highlight Series” posts…..stay tuned!!
With each destination I visit there seems to be so much I would like to see and do. Not just stand in tourist lines for entrance to a venue or take a tour – But to truly spend time and experience authentic cuisine, chat with locals over a coffee or glass of wine.
Travel is about exploring the unknown (to you); learning; experiencing first hand about the country or region you are visiting. No matter the age, I always say that “Travel is the Best Classroom”
